Glad you enjoyed browsing, the site, Yvonne. And I thought the spirit-trapping thing was pretty cool, too. Like a force field, only decorative.

Keely, thanks so much for the compliment about my site. Hey, I LOVE the idea of making a bottle tree do double duty as a memory tree. I used to keep wine and champagne corks to commemorate special occasions, but after a while, you run out of space unless you decide to refloor your kitchen with them. I guess more memories would simply be an excuse to add another tree and another until you have an orchard of memories.

Jane - gorgeous site! I've never seen a bottle tree until now but, wow, that's exactily what it is, isn't it? I can imagine hanging memories off the branches..."Oh, that was the bottle of wine we brought back from vacation in Oregon." "And that one was Christmas 2007 when it snowed in Texas and we had an excuse to break out the mulling spices." What a neat and nifty idea. And how cool that the idea has survived the transplant from another continent and culture. Makes it even better, somehow!

I love the idea of trapping evil spirits in the bottles. And they're pretty to look at, too!

And I second Lizbeth's comment about your WONDERFUL list of linkage. Lots to browse . . .

It is wild, isn't it, Liz? I think of myself as such a child of the South, but I've admired that bottle tree for at least a couple of years with no idea it was part of a Southern folk tradition with roots in Africa. Maybe it was my Tennessee blood that drew me to it, though.

Bottle trees protect a house and its inhabitants because evil spirits enter the bottles and are trapped there. Karen White says seeing her first at a friend's house in Memphis helped spark the idea for On Folly Beach. The tradition plays out beautifully in her story.

Thank you for the compliments on my site. I wanted it to be useful to other writers, so, yes, please, link to it.

Jane,
That's, I think, the most unusual thing I've ever heard of and the story of how you read about it in a book and then found one you'd been walking by in your own neighborhood? So cool--almost freaky. Power in fiction is right! I can't think of a specific example, but reading fiction is always sort of breathtaking when I come across a universal truth--something that hits me mid-chest and I say, 'wow, I didn't know other people acted that way too.' That's the kind of fiction I've always wanted to write.

Your web/blogsite is lovely--and as for navigability--easy peasy!! Nicely done--have fun with it.

Oh, Susye, I love it! Now we just need to fit the rest of the lyrics.
But, yep, it is time for the kids to go back to school.
